Of Venus, But Sent to Mars
Oil with acrylic underpainting.
Inspired by Norse (and many other cultures) mythologies, Of Venus, But Sent to Mars depicts a hare/rabbit surrounded by lush flora. Rabbits commonly symbolize fertility, adaptability, and femininity. With this there is a direct connection to the planet Venus, but what of Mars? In 1990’s Thomas Gangle wrote about the idea of sending rabbits to inhabit Mars, all started by Russia’s experiment of sending animals into space. While this is cruel treatment of animals (and is not supported), Gangle talks about rabbits and their adaptability and ability to bring life to an ecosystem, supporting their mythological symbolism. It is also a fun fact to read about within history!
